Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions demonstrates how to tie Tom Rosenbauer’s Lucky Rabbit’s Foot Emerger in this fly tying video. What Makes it Lucky? Well it is made from a rabbit’s foot, right? Kidding aside,Tom Rosenbauer, noted author and host of the Orvis Fly Fishing Guide Podcast, developed this pattern some 20 years ago while a guide in Yellowstone National Park and to this day it’s still his go to emerger pattern. In fact, in a recent podcast where Tom named his top 12 dry flies that will catch fish “anywhere in the world”, there was only one emerger on [...]

Davie McPhail demonstrates how to tie a Haystack Emerger in this fly tying video. This fly pattern is a variant of the original Haystack developed by Fran Betters in the 1930s, only tied without a tail to allow rear of the fly to sink below the water surface to imitate an emerging mayfly. Haystack Emerger Fly Tying Tips Davie provides some great fly tying tips in this video including how to select deer hair, a really neat way to tie in deer hair without creating a large bump at the tie in point, and lastly how to create an anchor [...]

Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies show us how to tie the Drake Mackerel emerger, an Ephemera vulgata mayfly imitation, in this week’s Friday Night Fly Tying video. What is a Drake Mackerel? Photo credit Kim Hansen Good question. I wondered the same thing when I first saw this video. Ephemera vulgata, as the fancy folk call it, is basically a large brown mayfly, akin to a Green Drake. In some parts of the world it is simply known as “the mayfly”. Where to Find Drake Mackerel Word on the street is that the Drake Mackerel hatch is about to [...]

Continuing our mini-series on Pale Morning Dun fly patterns, our Friday Night Tying Video features the PMD Sparkle Dun developed by Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies. The short deer hair fiber with black tips that Craig describes comes from the leg of the deer and is commonly known as Comparadun hair. Comparadun hair is solid rather than hollow making it finer and easier to tie in. Material List Hook: TMC 100 #16-20 Thread: Danville [...]

With summer upon us and my thoughts out west, I thought it fitting to dedicate the next series of Friday Night Fly Tying videos to Pale Morning Dun patterns. Pale Morning Dun Patterns One the more famous hatches of the year in the Greater Yellowstone area, including the fabled waters of Yellowstone National Park and southern Montana is the Pale Morning Dun or PMD hatch. As George Anderson put’s it, This is THE hatch of the year on the famous spring creeks of Paradise Valley, like Armstrong’s, DePuy’s and Nelson’s. Anglers in the know book early to secure a space [...]

I was fishing the South Branch Raritan River in New Jersey last night and had the good fortune to catch a pretty impressive emergence of Sulphur mayflies just before dark. I had some lighter colored Fran Betters’ Usual fly patterns but I wish I had a few of the Snowshoe Rabbit Sulphur Emergers featured in this week’s Fly Night Fly Tying Video by Aaron Jasper of Trout Predator Online. 3 Key Elements of a Mayfly Emerger As Aaron points out there are 3 key elements to an effective mayfly emerger fly pattern – the nymphal shuck, the body and the [...]

Made famous on the San Juan River, Juan Ramirez shows us how to tie the KF Midge Emerger which works just about anywhere you find midges, which is just about everywhere. Magical Krystal Flash Ah the wonder of Krystal Flash, how did we get by without it? Remember that really cool video about the midge life cycle we featured a few weeks ago? You know the one with the phenomenal underwater camera work that showed how midge pupa generate gas bubbles to help carry them to the water surface when they are ready to emerge as an adult. Can anyone [...]
