Farmington River Brown Trout

22.5-inch Farmington River Brown

We welcome Rich Strolis to our growing family of guides providing you the latest fly fishing reports for the best trout fisheries in the US. Today we take a look at the Farmington River located in north central Connecticut.

Farmington River Fishing Conditions

Couldn’t be closer to perfect. The flows right now are just under 400 cfs and look to remain pretty much the same even with the little shot of rain earlier this week. With no significant rain in the forecast and a warmer weekend, the fishing should be red hot. The upper West Branch Farmington River Trout Management Area (TMA) is thick with Hendricksons, and big fish are eating them with trout up to 24 inches taken in the last week. The lower river is starting to see the beginning of the green and tan caddis but nothing too thick yet. That may change after this weekends warmer temperatures.

Farmington River Hatch Report

Hendricksons, Blue Quills, Olives, Winter/summer Caddis, Quill Gordons. Expect to start seeing some Dark Blue Sedges soon, maybe next week as well as tan and green caddis.

Farmington River Fishing Tips

Down and dirty, nymphs fished in all methods have been the most productive, but the surface fishing has been really good and has also accounted for some of the biggest fish in anglers catches in the last week. Effective patterns include a rusty spinner, Snowshoe Emerger, comparadun, Pheasant Tail, Hares Ear, RS2, WD40 and various soft hackles. Streamers are really starting to pick up now too.
