Along with his Farmington River fishing report today, Rich Strolis sent me this photo from a recent guide trip titled "Kids love fish too". He's got that right!
Here's what Rich had to say about Farmington River fishing right now.
Farmington River Conditions
The river is at a fantastic flow right now. Holding steady around 400 cfs, 50 degree water temperatures and hungry trout. The fish can be found in all water types right now. We are transitioning on the Farmington right now in terms of mayfly hatches. March Browns are making their way up the river, Yellow Quills are just starting as well as a few Small Sulfurs too. The caddis activity as of late has been very very good, with various sized Tan Caddis ranging from a size 20-14, Dark Blue Sedges sporadically in a size 10-14, and also various colored brown, and green caddis in the mix which are usually on the smaller size, anywhere from a 16-22. Medium sized yellow bodied craneflies are also hatching, throwing a wrench in the mix on some days as the fish will key in on them.
Farming River Fishing Tactics
As of right now various methods of nymph fishing are by far the most effective means to keep a bend in your rod consistently throughout the day. The longer leader French and Spanish methods are two very effective ways to catch trout right now as the fish are moving in and out of the heads of most pools into the shallows to feed. Pick your poison, virtually any method will work, things will start to get a little tougher as we move into the summer months, but if you know where and when to target the fish, you can have continual success even in the summer doldrums.
