Housatonic River Description and Access
Flowing through beautiful Litchfield County in northwestern Connecticut the Housatonic River is one of the crown jewels of the Eastern US for trout fly fishing. Comparable in size to many Western US rivers, the "Housy", as it is known locally, flows through deposits of limestone that supports prolific hatches of numerous species of Caddis and Mayflies from early Spring through late Fall. The Housatonic River is best known for the excellent brown trout and rainbow trout fishing in two Trout Management Areas (TMA) managed as a Catch and Release fisheries.
Upper Trout Management Area (Cornwall Bridge Area)
The upper Trout Management Area (TMA) of the Housatonic River extends ~ 10 miles from Falls Village, Connecticut down to the Rt 4 bridge in Cornwall, Connecticut. This section is managed strictly as catch-and-release and contains legendary named pools such as Push'em Up Pool, the Doctor's Hole, and the Elms. The lower 3 miles from the Dun Rollin Pool to the Rt 4 Cornwall Bridge is set aside for fly fishing only. Access to the upper TMA is very good from Route 7 (Kent Road).
Lower Trout Management Area (Bull's Bridge Area)
The lower Trout Management Area extends ~ 3 miles from Bulls Bridge down to Gaylordsville Bridge and is managed as catch-and-release only. Access to this area is limited to a few pull-offs on Route 7 (Kent Road).
