Vermilion River (OH)

Vermilion River Steelhead Trout Fishing Area ~ 15 miles

The Vermilion was first stocked by the Ohio DOW with Little Manistee River steelhead trout in 2002. Rainbows will make spawning runs up into the Vermilion River to reach the areas where they were stocked by the DNR even though they cannot successfully spawn in the river. Young rainbows then move downstream and out into Lake Erie within a year or two of being stocked. During their first year in Erie they will reach 18 inches and weigh in at around 2 to 3 pounds. During their second year in the lake 29-inch fish are common and will weigh in from 8 to 11 pounds.

Vermilion River Description

The Vermilion River is tributary to Lake Erie in western Ohio and winds through urban areas, rural landscapes, valleys, and gorges. The " V" gets excellent returns of spring run Manistee strain steelhead starting in late November. Thanks to the management efforts of the Ohio Division of Wildlife the Vermilion River has become a solid spring steelhead fishery.

Vermilion River Fishing Report

Orvis endorsed guide Greg Senyo of Steelhead Alley Outfitters writes a weekly Vermilion River fishing report that is very good. Greg is very honest and if the fishing is not good he says so. As with all the Orvis fishing reports, Greg provides a nice summary of the flies and fly fishing gear you'll need.
