I came across a great collection of traditional soft hackle fly tying videos by Whiskey Creek Flies, including this classic Partridge and Yellow soft hackle fly pattern.
Simple to Tie
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I like flies that are simple to tie and it doesn’t get much easier than this.
A Delight to Fish
Growing up I fished dry flies 90% of the time, but when the fish were not feeding on the surface I was taught to swing a pair of wet flies using a classical down-and-across presentation. It was easy enough and a good way to methodically work a stretch of water. I didn’t fish soft hackles then, but they too come alive using this presentation and drive trout nutty.
With my recent addiction to European nymphing techniques it seems I’ve kind of lost sight of just how enjoyable it is to fish this way. Davy Wotton’s Wet Fly Ways
So the next time you are out and get tired of lobbying Czech nymphs, tie on a Partridge and Yellow, throw one down-and-across and fish like a gentlemen.
