Gunnison River Fly Fishing Report

While the salmonfly hatch is over, Caddis and small stoneflies are providing excellent dry fly action and it won't be long before hopper season is here!

A quick update on fly fishing the Gunnison is provided below (courtesy of Orvis):

Best time of day to fish: 9 AM to 7 PM

Best stretch: Almont to Coopers Ranch

"Must-have" fly fishing patterns in descending order of importance:

Tips of the week:

Fish tandem nymph rigs and dry-dropper rigs. Streamers are also effective, especially when the water is a bit stained.

Best Techniques:
Fish tandem nymph rigs with a mayfly nymph, like a Micro Mayfly or BLM, trailing behind a larger stonefly nymph. Fish a dry-dropper rig in the afternoon with a big stonefly adult on top and a BLM or Copper John below.

7 day forecast:
The Gunnison River is fishing great. Green Drakes and PMDs are now hatching on the Gunnison. Caddis are hatching in the afternoons/evenings. This is some of the best dry fly action of the year.
