Olive The Little Woolly Bugger – A Wonderful Story

by Fly Fishing Reporter on December 3, 2009

I came home tonight to find Olive waiting for me at the door - Olive The Little Woolly Bugger by Kirk Werner that is.

A Great Introduction to Fly Fishing

This beautifully illustrated children's book about a wonderful little woolly bugger, Olive, arrives with great anticipation as I know my boys will love it. Chris, Kyle and Jack, who range in age from 5 to 10, have all recently starting tying flies and love to read. My kids get the biggest kick out of tying flies and are going to love reading about Olive as she heads off to Camp Tightloops where she is to learn how to catch trout.

Fly Fishing Camp

A fly fishing camp, Olive meets a whole cast of characters such as Randal the Royal Coachman, Sally the Yellow Sally, and Stan the Stimulator, which Kirk keenly uses to introduce kids to the different types of flies. Quickly noticing she is rather ordinary looking compared to all the other trout flies at camp, Olive starts to doubt herself. With encouragement from her wise old instructor, Mr. Muddler Minnow, Olive preservers and comes to realize that all flies are different and they all have something they are good at.

The Adventures of Olive The Little Woolly Bugger Continue

Olive goes on to bigger adventures in Olive and The Big Stream and Olive Goes for a Wild Ride, the second and third book in this wonderful series of books about fly fishing for kids. If you are looking for a fun way to introduce a youngster to a lifetime pursuit of.....ummm, well, I'm not quite sure what it is we're after, but you know what I mean - then look no further.

I hope you enjoy Olive as much as I have and as much as I know my kids will!

I wanted to extend a hearty “Thank You” for taking the time to offer a review of my books. I’m glad that you and your boys enjoyed them – the whole point of my stories is to get kids excited about fly fishing. Sounds like your boys didn’t need Olive to do that for them, but I’m glad to hear the books were well received. Thanks again!

Tightlines,

Kirk Werner
