Today we take a digital look at steelhead fishing areas on Rocky River, one of five Lake Erie tributaries stocked with Manistee strain steelhead.

Like the Vermilion River steelhead trout fishing map we discussed yesterday, the Ohio DNR has a pretty good map showing designated steelhead trout fishing areas and public access points along the Rocky River, but if you haven't been there before it might be a bit hard finding your way.

Rocky River Interactive Map

If I'm going to drive 7 hours to fish a river I've never seen, I want to know where I'm going. So we geocoded the 13 Ohio DNR designated steelhead trout fishing area and public access points on the Rocky River and plotted them on this handy interactive Google map (red icons). Included are the Emerald Necklace, Rock Cliff Spring, Madison Pool, Horse Ford, Morley Ford, Lorain Rd Bridge, Blue Bank Pools, Mastic Woods, South Mastic Picnic Areas, Brookpark Overpass, Cedar Point Area and the Lagoon Dam steelhead fishing areas.

Also included is the Rocky River USGS gauge (yellow icon) so you can get real-time stream flow data and determine when it is time to skip-to-my-loo and hit the river. Just click on the gauge marker and a graph of stream flow (in cfs) for the past seven days will pop up.

Lastly, we included a few user-generated photographs (purple camera icon) for your viewing pleasure.

How to Use Rocky River Google Map

You can navigate about the Rocky River Google map using the pan and zoom controls in the upper left-hand corner and change to 'Satellite' or 'Terrain' views using the button in the upper right-hand corner. If you zoom in close while in the 'Satellite' mode it is pretty amazing the level of detail you can see, including parking areas and trails to the river.

Enjoy!

Fun Fact: Rocky River was named one of the “150 Best Places to fish in America” in the June 2007 issue of Field and Stream magazine, Cleveland Metroparks Blog.
