How to Dye Feathers Sunburst

Davie McPhail shows us how to dye strung hackle feathers Sunburst in this fly tying video tutorial. If you have not ventured into the world of dyeing your own fly tying material (yet), this video by Davie McPhail is a good introduction into the Art and Alchemy of dyeing fly tying material. Dyeing Feathers In a nut shell, here are the basic steps: Wash feathers in soapy water. Davie recommends Johnsons Baby Shampoo. This removes oils from the feathers and helps dye penetration. Heat 1 1/2 pints water to near boiling. For best results use distilled water. Add 1/4 to [...]

[Video] How to Tie Ephemera Vulgata Mayfly Imitation

Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies show us how to tie the Drake Mackerel emerger, an Ephemera vulgata mayfly imitation, in this week’s Friday Night Fly Tying video. What is a Drake Mackerel? Photo credit Kim Hansen Good question. I wondered the same thing when I first saw this video. Ephemera vulgata, as the fancy folk call it, is basically a large brown mayfly, akin to a Green Drake. In some parts of the world it is simply known as “the mayfly”. Where to Find Drake Mackerel Word on the street is that the Drake Mackerel hatch is about to [...]

[Video] Salmonfly Time!

Once I was a salmonfly… Image by miss grunzke …now I’m just a crinkley shell With the Salmonfly hatch in full swing on many of our western US rivers I thought I’d pay homage to the great winged beasts with this week’s Friday Night Fly Tying Video. In case you have not had the chance to fish this great hatch I’ve also included a little footage of the salmonfly hatch on the Yakima River. Yakima River Salmonfly Hatch Salmonfly Nymphs You might have noticed the Salmonfly is big! This makes them fun to tie and even more to fish because [...]

[Video] Vitreus Soft Hackle

This Friday Night Fly Tying Video is brought to us this week by Rich Strolis and features a versatile soft hackle pattern that can also be fished as a nymph in the round and deep simply by adding a bead. Farmington River Yellow Quill Hatch Rich ties and fishes the Vitreus Soft Hackle to match the prolific Yellow Quill hatch on the Farmington River in Connecticut where he guides. I like Rich’s tip of using UTC florescent orange thread since the female Yellow Quill have orange eggs – pretty neat! Another key tip that Rich points out is to minimize [...]

[Video] Snowshoe Rabbit Sulphur Emerger

I was fishing the South Branch Raritan River in New Jersey last night and had the good fortune to catch a pretty impressive emergence of Sulphur mayflies just before dark. I had some lighter colored Fran Betters’ Usual fly patterns but I wish I had a few of the Snowshoe Rabbit Sulphur Emergers featured in this week’s Fly Night Fly Tying Video by Aaron Jasper of Trout Predator Online. 3 Key Elements of a Mayfly Emerger As Aaron points out there are 3 key elements to an effective mayfly emerger fly pattern – the nymphal shuck, the body and the [...]

[Video] How to Tie a Tungsten Jig

I have to admit when I came across this week’s Friday Night Fly Tying Video by Chris Michels of Creek Addict I was a little embarrassed. I often use jigs for bass and panfish but I don’t normally think of using Tungsten jigs for trout, at least not on a fly rod. Used extensively in Europe, Tungsten nymph jigs have largely been overlooked by fly fisherman here in the states, myself included, and I think we are missing out. Perfect for Czech Nymphing Tungsten jigs are great for deep nymphing and lend themselves well to some of the euro nymphing [...]

[Video] Tying Fran Betters’ Usual with Davie McPhail

This week’s Friday Night Morning Fly Tying video is a dandy – Fran Betters’ Usual tied by Davie McPhail. The Usual is a very versatile fly pattern and can be tied to represent many of the larger, high riding mayflies such as the Hendrickson, Cahill and Sulphur simply by varying the color. Tips on Tying the Usual with Snowshoe Rabbit Well if you are looking for a simple dry fly to tie, the Usual is it. Using just one material, Snowshoe Rabbit, you can whip off a dozen of these in no time. Snowshoe Rabbit is pretty easy to tie [...]

[Video] Happy Mother’s Day Caddis

Earlier this week I ran a Mother’s Day special on Elk Hair figuring it would tie in nicely with tonight’s Friday Night Fly Tying Video featuring a Mother’s Day Caddis fly pattern. Who knew that Mother’s Day is actually a week from Sunday not this Sunday? Well, apparently I got that a little mixed up. Soooo, this year’s Mother Day Caddis coverage starts a week early. Better early than too late though, right? Anyhoo, enjoy tonight’s fly tying video by The Caddis Fly Angling Shop, a really nice looking Mother’s Day Caddis imitation which is a modification of the X [...]

[Video] Hendrickson Soft Hackle

This week’s Friday Night Fly Tying Video is brought to us by Rich Strolis of Catching Shadows Guide Service and features a buggy looking Hendrickson soft hackle. Tips on Tying Hendrickson Soft Hackle You’ll notice Rich is using a heavier thread (UTC 140) which is easier to split when making a dubbing rope. When using a heavier thread I find you really need to be careful with the number of thread wraps used to avoid thread build up. Watch the video carefully and you’ll see how precise Rich is with the number of thread wraps; you could probably count the [...]
