@JimmyTH good point and thanks for commenting. I talk a lot about fishing for trout on this site, but when I'm out with my 3 boys we fish for whatever is around! I also fish for striped bass (saltwater) from a kayak up off Cape Cod (MA) and you are right about how much fun it is to fish for something big enough to tow you around. The first time it happened to me I was a little spooked because I was in the ocean and wasn't sure where I was going to end up. Fortunately, I was able to make my way to a sand bar and get off the kayak and land the fish. Definitely a blast though.

Just about any place you can put a boat in the water is a place where you can catch fish of some kind, if you're willing to fish for what's there. For me the big adaptation I had to make in order to fish from a canoe or a kayak was to fish "locally" instead of cruising to find hot spots. Kind of hard to cruise if you paddle there. People who just go after bass are missing a lot of fun. I like fishing for carp, it's pretty exciting to go after something big enough to pull you around. I did try to eat one once and was very sorry, it's a shame to kill something just to find out there's not much point to cooking it.
