[Video] Craig Mathews Fly Tying Videos

Craig Mathews released his first fly tying video this week – on YouTube that is. Welcome aboard Craig!

Madison River Zelon Midge

Craig walks us through tying a simple midge fly pattern, or at least Craig makes it look simple, that is reportedly a killer on the Madison River this time of year. The Zelon midge is designed to imitate an emerging midge and they are just about everywhere so I figure this pattern ought to work just about anywhere. One of my favorite parts of the video is Craig’s nifty whip finisher Bonsai tool that apparently slices and dices too - pause the video at the 1:27 minute mark and you'll see what I mean. Craig, we’re going to need a little more info on how to make that too.

A Little About Craig

You can find Craig hanging at Blue Ribbon Flies, a fly shop in West Yellowstone, MT he started some 30 years ago. Acclaimed author of numerous books, with several notable works on fishing the waters of the greater Yellowstone National Park area, Craig is also an avid steward of the environment and advocate for watershed protection.

Honored as TU Stream Champion in the Winter 2010 issue of Trout Unlimited Magazine, Craig has been a steadfast advocate for protecting one of the crown jewels of this county, Yellowstone National Park - for which we thank him. Yellowstone is one of my favorite places on earth and I look forward to taking my boys there for the first time next year.

Fly Tying Channel Debut

In case you missed it, we recently rolled out the Fly Tying Channel and added more than 50 fly tying videos this past week, including Craig's. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Happy Tying and Happy New Year!
