Great tips on tying in the mallard, I always make a mess of that
Hi Davie,
I certainly wouldn’t be bored and would greatly appreciate it! I just can’t get the wing or topping right on a Jock Scott. My crests just dont have that cascading effect and my wings come apart.
If you have any hints or tips you can share with me i would be very very greatful.
Many Thanks…
Best Regards,
~David
Thanks for the advise and sure hope that u get that mic fix/ replace as these vids are sure improving my tying ability.
Hi Chance,
The only difference between the original Rebel and the one that I tyed is the legs, you could tye many variants from this style of fly in whatever colour you think would work..
I may sometime in the future think about tying a classic style fly but I would need to have lots of time to put this together and have all my equipment working perfectly and that’s not very often just now I can’t film due to my ear mic packing in all I did was blow into it to see if it was on..

Hi stephenjapp,
When I worked at the fishery all I used was a shrimp pattern and my favourite a black pheasant tail tyed with copper wire fished along the sides and especially at the burn mouth. An odd time I would use a small damsel pattern which was no bigger than an inch either with a 2mm painted chartreuse or flo-red head..
All the best Davie
Hi Davie
Great looking fly. what other colors do you tie it in? Or any other variants do you tie it in?
I know we talked about it before but I would love to see a series on a fully dressed classic salmon fly. Or a more simple one either way I could watch it over and over.
Thanks for the Great Videos
Chane
Hi davie, what flies would u fish over the winter for fishery trout as I am fed up lure hauling and the place I fish (high dam) gets stalked once a week but near the end of the week I am struggling to fool resident fish :@ any tips ?
Hi Davie, brilliant fly as per usual. I’m open to correction but I think that the original dressing was by a fellow Corkman. Cork is affectionately (or not) known as the Rebel County”. Looking forward to lots of new flies from that magical bench in Ayr.
Cheers, Donie, Cork City.
Hi John93Smith,
That’s what tying your own flies is all about trying something different, I’m sure it would take fish…
All the best Davie
Hi Paul,
I too could watch someone tye a classic fly, Michael Radencich books are very good for anyone that is thinking of tying a classic or freestyle fly.
I’ll send you a link to his website as I can’t show it on this page…
All the best Davie
Hello Davie how are you doing ? i was wondering if you tied this on a B175 size 14 without the hackle and with the tail a pheasant tail so it would be a nymph would you say it could work ?
all the best ,
John
Hi Davie,
I wam intersted in classic salmon fly tying and was wondering if you knew any good books to get started with that would explain materials, methods etc.
Thanks, Paul
ps. I personally wouldnt be bored watching you tie a classic salmon fly as i would most people I know who watch your videos!
Hi sasquatch446,
I would like to film tying a classic style fly but like you said it would take a few uploads to put this on youtube but you would find as well most would be bored to tears waiting for the finished fly…
All the best Davie
superb looking fly, deffo need to tie a few of those bad boys up look superb and the head just looks excellent
many thanks
Kenny
Davie, another wonderful tie. I’ve seen some of your fully dressed classic salmon flies. Have you ever thought of making a video series of how to tie a fully dressed salmon fly? Or would it be too long?
Brill tying as usual, and beautiful colour harmonies!
I still have a spool of the ‘old/antique gold’ Lurex, but not sure if it’s still obtainable.Copper tinsel/mylar would look nice though.
Best wishes, Alan
Hi Daniel (CpDannyboy0345),
I would never say no as I like to experiment myself that’s what makes tying your own flies fun and a red tail on any fly will always be worth trying, but I would try and stay close to the original dressing of the Rebel as possible as it’s a very good pattern to have in your box…
All the best Davie
Hi stephenjapp,
Cookshill and recently I got some from Ford fly tying but make sure you ask for the wild and not the domestic…
All the best Davie
Hi Neil,
I bought the tinsel from Mayo Fly Craft and Lureflash a while ago but I’m not sure if they still do it, I may have to ask myself as I’m starting to run out…
All the best Davie
